Joint UNEP and Statistics Sweden Expert Meeting on Energy Subsidies

Geneva, 26 - 27 May 2008

On 26 May 2008, UNEP and Statistics Sweden (SCB) organized a joint expert workshop on data and statistics of energy subsidies in Geneva. The objective was to develop an action plan to address specific issues in this field, building on what has been done or what is being planned by key actors.

This workshop was a follow-up to a UNEP–UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) meeting held in November 2007, which highlighted the importance of reforming environmentally harmful energy subsidies. At that meeting, absence of a common definition of energy subsidies, different types of data used in problem analysis, unavailability of relevant data, and lack of a common database as well as of an institution to host it were identified as among basic constraints that have prevented the reform of energy subsidies.

To address these constraints, UNEP and SCB have been in close contact with experts and institutions over the last six months. Based on these consultations, the workshop aimed to examine specific issues, coordinate various ongoing efforts, propose a collective plan to contribute to the eventual standardisation of energy subsidy statistics at the international level, and facilitate regular data collection and reporting at the national level.
